Obituary for Arlene Leota Portwood

Arlene Leota Johnson Portwood was born October 8, 1931, on the farm near Guthrie Center, Iowa to Walter H. Johnson, Sr. and Ethel Baldwin Johnson. On June 23, 2000 she married her best friend and love of her life, Charles Portwood. Arlene grew up the 4th of 5 children, learning hard work and responsibility during the depression years. She graduated from Wiota High School in 1949. As a young mother, she started working in the telephone office in Atlantic, Iowa. From there, she wore many different “hats” – helping to run a restaurant, gas station and a bar. Following these endeavors, she worked as a cook, nurse’s aide and a med tech.

At age 75 she was still working 100 hours per pay period, plus her everyday home chores of cooking, cleaning, laundry, yard work and gardening. Along with the gardening, came her art of canning. She loved to cook and share recipes. She made an awesome coconut cream pie, for which she was not in a hurry to share the recipe. She always made sure she was making our favorite pie, whether it was pecan, pumpkin or cherry. Up until her last surgery, she still thought she needed to bake some kind of dessert every day. She also made really good homemade wine; she didn’t drink it, but was always sharing with the girls and older granddaughters. Over the past 10 years, Arlene had several setbacks, with major health issues, always trying to be strong for everyone else. She was looking forward to the warmer weather so she and Dad could sit on the porch and enjoy watching the hummingbirds. Arlene passed away April 3, 2018 at Golden Valley Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Portwood of the home; daughter, Linda Orfield of Clinton, MO; sons, David (Rebecca) Minks of Marshall, MO and Stacy (Pamelia) Minks of Butler, MO; grandchildren, Christine (Cory) Schmidt, Amy (Dennis) Setzer, twins, Aleah and John Charles Minks, Machelle Bearden, Michael Hicks, Erin Katie Minks, Kayleigh (Matt) Mayo, Brennan Minks, Connor Minks, Parker Collins and Bridger Collins; great-grandchildren, Dylan Kiepe, Cameron Setzer, Corbin Schmidt, Courtney Schmidt, Arely Minks, Brody, Maleah, Remi and Presley Hicks; a brother, Walter Johnson, Jr.; a sister, Ruth Logan; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Walter, Sr. and Ethel Johnson; her husband, Cleo Minks; a brother Virgil Ted Johnson; a sister, Violet Lettington; and a son-in-law, Larry Orfield.
