Obituary for Geneva Elizabeth (Woirhaye) Shulse

Geneva Elizabeth (Woirhaye) Shulse, age 95, died Saturday at Brookdale Senior Living in Overland Park, KS.

Genny was born on May 4th, 1922 to Roy and Lena (Alberts) Woirhaye of Urich, MO.   She spent her childhood in Urich, Deepwater, Clinton, MO and in Oklahoma. During WWII, Genny worked at Pratt Whitney in Kansas City making airplane parts.  On August 1, 1945, she married Raymond Shulse while he was on a month’s leave from serving in the Army in Germany - he shipped back out 4 days after their wedding.

After Pratt Whitney closed, Genny moved back to Clinton, MO until Raymond returned from serving in the Pacific.  The early days of their marriage were spent at “Shanky Pen Holler”.  A large tent where Raymond’s dad and uncle had set up a sawmill in a plot of timber near Stover, MO on the Missouri River.  She was very glad to see the last tree cut and move into their new house in Urich, MO.

In 1949, Raymond and his father bought the Hurley Lumber Yard and renamed it Urich Lumber Yard.  In addition to raising a family and keeping the books for the Lumber Yard, Genny was active in Urich community.  She was a member of the Urich Christian Church where she taught a Sunday school class for fifteen years.  She worked with many Reunion committees and on the board that built the local ball park where she coached the “little girls” baseball league for six years.

In 1990, Raymond and Genny built a new home in Clinton where she grew beautiful flowers and displayed her beloved antiques and Santa Clauses. She enjoyed traveling, golfing, crafts and visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She also kept up with her monthly WAGGSACK Bridge club meeting.  Organized in December of 1948, the club met continuously for more than 55 years with four of the original eight members.

Genny is survived by her husband, Raymond Shulse, her son, Donn Shulse, her half-sister Helen (Woirhaye) Gieselman, half-brother Paul Woirhaye, three grandchildren (Jon Foster, Rebecca Foster and Taylor Shulse) and two great-grandchildren (Sara and Syndie Foster). She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cindia (Shulse) Higney, her sister Lavaude (Woirhaye) Crocker and half-brother Charles Woirhaye.

The family will receive visitors at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 2nd at Consalus Funeral Home, Clinton.  A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM followed by interment at Urich Cemetery, Urich, MO.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Urich Historical Society/Museum and may be left in care of Consalus Funeral Home, 209 S. 2nd St., Clinton, MO 64735.
