Obituary for Marlin Rein

Marlin LaVerne Rein, age 81, of Clinton, MO died Friday, May 4, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City, MO.

Marlin was born in LaCrosse, KS, on January 19, 1937 to George and Olinda Rein. At that time, the family lived on a small farm north of Bazine, KS. Marlin always believed that the single event in his life that did more than any other to shape the man he was to become was the death of his father when Marlin was 11 years old, leaving him and his mother in the family home. Marlin loved playing whatever sport was in season. A Jayhawker for life, he often recalled sitting with an ear to the radio trying to listen over the static to whatever game was being played. Basketball was the sport of choice for Marlin and he remembered proudly being chosen a co-captain of his 1955 Russell Bronco state championship team.

His basketball abilities earned him a scholarship to Fort Hays State College where he graduated in 1959 with a B.S. in Business Administration. Upon graduation, Marlin enrolled at KU where he earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.

Marlin married Dianne Colhour in June, 1959. Two sons were born to the marriage: Mark David on April 17, 1964, and Scott Phillip on June 5, 1968.

On October 3, 1987, he married his best friend Sherry Brown in the living room of her parent’s home. Marlin and Sherry always believed theirs was the perfect marriage. Sherry often said if she could give one thing to our children it would be that they could have a marriage such as ours.

Following separation from the Air Force in 1965, Marlin’s career extended over 36 years in governmental finance. Marlin served as assistant city manager of Westminster, CO; the Governor’s budget staff in Kansas; the Legislative Fiscal Analyst for the State of Nebraska; and the Kansas Legislative Research Department as that organization’s first Chief Fiscal Analyst. In 1983, Marlin was appointed to the joint roles of Associate Director of the University of Kansas Hospital and Associate Director of Business & Finance for the University of Kansas. Several years later, he was appointed by the Chancellor to the dual positions of University Director of Budget and University Director of Governmental Affairs. Just being associated with the University of Kansas was a dream come true for the boy from Russell. That mystical place high on the hills of Lawrence became a realized reality for a too brief period ending with his retirement in 2002.

Marlin was preceded in death by his dear wife and closest friend Sherry on March 5, 2016. His father passed in 1948 and his mother in 1976. An older brother Allen and an older sister Talia Ann both passed on September 3, 2017. His two brothers-in-law, Walter Wegele and Herbert Karst preceded him as did Sherry’s parents Robert and LaVerne Angle and her sister Jennifer.

He is survived by his son Mark of Overland Park, KS; a son Scott and his wife LaDale and daughters Ashley and Erin of Bayau Vista, TX; his daughter Abby Zavos and her husband Chuck and children Amara and Eli Phillips and Gram of Liberty, MO; a sister Georgina Wegele of Newton, KS; and a sister-in-law, LaVera Rein of Johnstown, CO.

The family will receive visitors at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the United Methodist Church, Clinton. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 A.M. Interment of Marlin and Sherry’s remains will be at Pioneer Cemetery on the campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 16, 2018.
