Obituary for Raymond Shulse

Raymond Madison Shulse, age 95, of Clinton, formerly of Urich, died Monday, May 7th, 2018 at the Brookdale Senior Living Center in Overland Park, KS.

Raymond was born in McRae, AR on April 2, 1923 to Clarence and Vixen Shulse. They moved to Urich, MO when Raymond was 14 months old. Raymond as a youngster, fed draft horses that pulled logs to the saw mill. He attended Urich schools and was on the honor roll along with being the President of his senior class. Raymond was a star basketball player, making baskets from behind the half court line. He achieved a high jump of 10 ½ feet. After his graduation in 1941 and then attended the University of Missouri in Columbia Studying engineering until Raymond was drafted to the army in February of 1943 until his discharge in 1946. He served with Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 387th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division under General George Patton towards the end of the Battle of the Bulge. He began his duty at Camp Lucky Strike at Le Havre and his tour of duty took him across Belgium and through Germany all the way to the Czechoslovakian border. After the victory in Europe he spent the last 7 months of his duty as part of the occupation force in Japan.

Raymond Married Geneva (Genny) Woirhaye on August 1, 1945 while on a month leave and was shipped back out 4 days after the wedding. After his discharge, Raymond returned and lived in a large tent on a plot of timber near Stover, MO where Raymond’s father and uncle had set up a saw mill. They called it “Shanky Pen Holler.”

In 1949, Raymond and his father bought the Hurley Lumber Yard and renamed it Urich Lumber Yard. He was the charter member of the Lion’s Club and along with Genny, worked with the Urich reunion Committee. He retired in 1988 and built a new home in Clinton, MO in 1999. Raymond enjoyed his retirement paying golf, gardening and traveling.

Raymond is survived by son, Donn Shulse, three grandchildren; Jon and Rebecca Foster and Taylor Shulse and two great-grandchildren; Sara and Sydnie Foster. He was preceded in death by his wife; Geneva, his daughter; Cindia (Shulse) Higney and his sister; Pauline Shulse.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Urich American Legion or the charity of one’s choice left in the care of Consalus Funeral Home, 209 South 2nd Street, Clinton, MO 64735.
